Under the newly established Search and Rescue programm, that has been voted by the Hellenic Government, a SAR helicopter will soon be based at Ioannina Intl Airport, in order to provide immediate services, mainly for incidents that have to do with mountaineers, climbers and hikers around the aera of northern Pindus mountain ridge. Ioannina airport will be one of the, totally, six stand-by air bases, which will provide sufficient SAR services in Greece, expected to be set up by the beggining of summer 2023. The helicopter base will be active 24/7, providing instant support – an important and necessary service, especially during the latest years, where the tourist hickers’ wave has been vertically increased at the area. The SAR base will contibute significantly to the safety and confidence of all the tourists, who wish to visit and discover the unique Pindus mountains.
